  Here's a familiar subject from a slightly different perspective.

  <title> Lake Superior Sunrise </title>

<description>

  I started the day's bike ride at twilight just south of Marquette. By the time I got to the city, the sun was just starting to peek over the Lake Superior horizon, and I got to watch this beautiful sunrise as I rode along Lake Shore Drive.

After all was said and done, I rode out past Sugarloaf Mountain all the way to the Big Bay Lighthouse and back, for a 77 mile journey (<a href="http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=914648">approximate route map here</a>).

  We've made this trip a million times before. Seven hours from home to Marquette, or a couple more to Houghton. Crossing the bridge is something of a ritual, beyond which the spaces open up, the pace slows down, and Michigan begins to really show its natural wonder.

  The parks are empty and the sidewalks abandoned. Maybe there really is something better going on indoors, but somehow I doubt it; it's a perfect day to go exploring and find what others have forgotten.

  We explored the <a href="http://www.lsa.umich.edu/mbg/">Matthaei Botanical Gardens</a> in Ann Arbor today for a refreshing reprieve from the grey dullness of winter. I've placed <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/aquatic/sets/72157594541683707/">all the photos</a> from the outing in a set.

  This photo was taken with a 50mm f/1.6 lens from an old Fujica camera. It doesn't attach to my Canon camera (at least without an adaptor that I don't have), but if I leave the lens wide open, focus ahead of time, and just sort of hold it in front of my camera, I can actually coax good shots out of it.

  Who better to tolerate experiments with off-camera flash than the faithful hound...? This was done all manually, holding the shutter open for a couple seconds while holding and pressing the flash button from off to the side.

<description>

  I had some free time before the Flickr meetup in Ypsi, so I parked by the river in Ann Arbor and walked around with the camera for a while as it was getting dark. It turned out it was the coldest night in three years and my hands were going numb even with a pair of ski gloves on.
